The convenience of the tool is huge. As far as metadata, Lightroom keywords are already added as Flickr tags, and Flickr exposes some of the other important IPTC metadata as well under "more properties" such as copyright notice, creator, and such. Regarding the keyword mappings, while the SDK can make your wishes come true someday, right now you can modify a tag in Flickr and see it globally changed throughout your images.
